Rama Nama Benefits: What Happens While Chanting

A dedicated sadhaka engaged in Mantra Sadhana before Sri Sita Ram and Sri Hanuman ji Maharaj, demonstrating how chanting the two-syllabled Rama Nama sweetens the mind, removes material obsessions, and brings the ultimate pleasure of liberation to the soul.

The Mystical Power of the Name of Rama

From ancient history to modern times, spirituality of Bharat has revolved around the Divine name of Sri Rama. The scriptures consider that Rama Nama is the shortest but most infinite house of Grace. According to Guruji, Sri Rama is not only the building block but is the base, the mid and the all in all of spiritual life. His realizations come from His deep Nishtha in Sri Rama Bhakta Hanumanji Maharaj.

Sri Sita Ram seated together while Sri Hanuman ji Maharaj expresses his deep Nishtha at the Lord's feet, illustrating the truth from the Rama Rahasya Upanishad that Sri Rama alone is the Supreme Brahman and Deliverer.

In the Rama Rahasya Upanishad, the Sages and Sanaka brothers inquire of the One Supreme most principle who is extolled across all the Vedas and Puranas. To this, Sri Hanumanji Maharaj says-

एतेषुचैव सर्वेषु तत्त्वं च ब्रह्म तारकम् ।
राम एव परं ब्रह्म तत्त्वं श्रीरामोब्रह्म तारकम् ॥

Eteṣucaiva sarveṣu tattvaṃ ca brahma tārakam |
Rāma eva paraṃ brahma tattvaṃ śrīrāmobrahma tārakam ||

Meaning: Among all scriptures, the Brahma Tarakam is the highest principle. Sri Rama alone is the Supreme Brahman. Sri Rama is the Deliverer (Taraka).

Rama Rahasya Upanishad, Chapter 1, Verse 7

So, the glories of Sri Rama are infinite as He is the Supreme Infinite Brahman and so too are the glories of His sweet name. The two syllabled name “Ra-ma” is the summum bonum of all religions.

The literal meaning of the word “Rama” means the pleasure-giver. Here, ‘pleasure’ is not the fleeting pleasures of the world. It refers to liberation which is the ultimate pleasure of the soul.

When a person attains purification, just chanting “Rama, Rama, Rama” gives pleasure to the senses. It sweetens the tongue, the speech, the mind, the intellect and the heart. A person obsessed with Rama Nama becomes free of all material obsessions. He is relieved of fear and pressure of the material world.

Now, we shall discuss some profound benefits of the Rama Nama

Why is the Ram Name So Powerful?

The sacred syllables of Rama Nama encompassing the cosmos, illustrating that it is not an ordinary sound but the Supreme Brahman and a powerful Beeja combination that influences the body mind system.

Rama Nama is not an ordinary sound. It is perhaps the only Powerful Beeja combination that anyone can chant without restriction. However Guruji also warns on certain fundamental rules, which only serious sadhakas know of.

These have to be followed. In the olden days, this warning may not have been necessary. This is because following the basic tenets of spirituality was implicit. The rules were an inseparable part of the practice. However, in this advancing age of Kaliyuga, spirituality is presented in a fragmented way, with partial rules and practices.

Guruji and all the sadhakas at YantraChants.com believe that the rules that were assumed in the older era have to be made explicit considering the times that we live in. We shall discuss these explicit points in the coming sections. But first we must explore what Beejas are present within the Rama Nama and how they affect Kundalini Shakti.

What happens when you chant “ram ram”?

When we chant Ram Ram constantly, the Nama Shakti (Power) influences our body mind system. Let us see how it impacts us.

The Rama Nama is composed of 3 main aksharas namely “ra” “aa” and “ma”.

  • “Ra” represents the Agni Beeja or Fire element. It indicates the Sushumna Nadi that flows through the central passage of the spine. It is neutral current and the subtlest of all lifeforces.
  • “Aa’ Beeja represents the Sun element or the brilliance aspect. It indicates the Pingala Nadi that excites the Kundalini. It is the life current flowing towards the right side of the spine.
  • “Ma’ Beeja represents the Moon element that cools the Kundalini. It is the cooling aspect. Ma indicates the Ida Nadi or prana flowing towards the left side of the spinal column.
Sri Rama providing soothing comfort under a full moon, symbolizing the 'Ma' akshara and the cooling Moon element that settles the mind like a vast silent lake and dissolves all agitation.

Benefits of Rama Nama

Rama Nama is beneficial, not only as a whole, but also each syllable has a unique impact on the mind, body, soul system.

1. Burning Past Samskaras, Karmas and Sins

The Rama Nama is like the wild forest fire that burns down the sins of our past karmas, across many lifetimes. This fiery attribute corresponds to the ‘Ra’ akshara in Rama Nama. It burns away or reduces to ashes the vritti that have caught us into this unending web of material life.

We are born, we grow, we maintain, we decay and die. During our lifetime we commit mistakes, we procreate, we search for happiness and we die without realizing our purpose of life. This tendency within the Jiva that makes it go in circles is the nature of mind, like a never ending itch. This is the Samskara which is just there and continues unabated.

The continuous cycle of human life from birth to death, illustrating the unending web of material existence and loops of behavior. The 'Ra' akshara in Rama Nama acts as a wild forest fire to burn these past samskaras and karmas, liberating the Jiva.

Ra burns our inner tendency that forms loops of behaviour, habits, thought patterns, choices, sins, etc that ultimately pushes one into the loop of birth and death.

तुलसी राम नाम के कारने, सब पाप जरि जाय । जैसे चिनगी आग की, घास छप्पर जराय ॥
Tulasī rāma nāma ke kārane, saba pāpa jari jāya | Jaise cinagī āga kī, ghāsa chappara jarāya ||

Meaning: “O Tulsidas, by chanting Rama Nama all sins are burnt to ashes. Just as a single tiny spark of fire burns down a massive roof made of dry grass.”

2. Reduces Agitation and Brings Calmness

The “Ma” akshara in the Rama Nama represents the mind and is the cooling element. This element makes the mind settle like a deep and vast silent lake. This cools down the blazing qualities of ‘Ra’ and ‘aa’ aksharas, spreading calmness and dissolving all the ruffles in the mind.

The Rama Nama on Sphatik Mala effectively cools the mind while chanting it on a Tulsi (pure vegetarian-no onion/ no garlic) or Neem Mala (for everyone) is useful for mind purification.

3. Respect and Magnetic Personality

The “aa” Beeja which represents the Sun element or the brilliance aspect. It is like the glory of the Sun planet. It represents the glorious Raghu Vamsha which is also known as Solar dynasty/ Surya Vamsha.

Through the power of Ra- the unpleasant habits and traits of the mind are destroyed, after which the soul is reinstated to its original glory. The solar element draws the entire world to the sadhaka’s feet.

In other words, fame and power start approaching a Sadhaka who is silent but powerful and brilliant as the Sun. Though this can become a pitfall for some, a serious sadhaka is able to sail through this through Divine Grace and Sri Rama’s will.

Sri Rama standing beneath a radiant sun, symbolizing the 'aa' Beeja and the glorious Raghu Vamsha that brings spiritual magnetism and fame to a sincere sadhaka.

Such a devotee possesses magnetism and virtues like the exalted kings of the Solar dynasty. He becomes a beacon of light from whom others benefit.

However, one must not have any such aims while performing Mantra Sadhana as these are gifts of desireless and genuine sadhana. Desire stunts spiritual progress. A true devotee is always very cautious to enter the domain of Siddhis as they can cause one’s downfall.

4. Purification of Mind and Wisdom

Rama Nama purifies the mind and makes it receptive to higher knowledge.

A wise sage holding Sri Rama in his heart while surrounded by seekers, illustrating how chanting Rama Nama purifies the mind and turns a person into a reservoir of wisdom.

Some notable examples are Sri Valmiki ji and Sri Tulsidas Goswami ji. Their pastimes reflect the Power of Rama Nama, although their own individual blessedness cannot be denied as they are indeed the topmost devotees of Sri Rama.

Attachment to worldly life and ungodly traits abandon the mind, turning one into a spiritual being. Such is the power of Rama Nama.

A person becomes a reservoir of wisdom. ‘Ma’ in Rama Nama is considered to be the ‘Ma’ akshara from the Panchakshari Mantra of Lord Shiva. This makes Rama Nama prevalent among Shaiva traditions as well.

5. Which chakra is activated by chanting RAM?

The Rama Nama works on four different chakras due to its threefold deity association and vibrations. Due to Agni and Surya Tattva it is resonant with Mooladhara and Manipura Chakras. It burns inertia and fear by reducing accumulation of old karmic impressions.

A meditating sadhaka chanting Rama Nama as the syllables activate the Mooladhara, Manipura, Anahata, and Ajna chakras due to the resonant Agni, Surya, and Chandra elements.

Chandra element works on the Ajna Chakra which is the doorway to the mind. It sharpens intuition and makes a person more empathetic. Emotions become more refined and stable. Since, heart is the seat of emotions, the Anahata Chakra is also positively influenced by the Shri Rama Nama

Why Can Rama Nama Sadhana Become Difficult for Some Seekers?

Although Rama Nama is accessible to everyone, it is still important to consider that its vibration is resonant with Beeja mantras. We gave consultations to a couple of seekers who were concerned that their Mantra Sadhana brought about sudden bouts of mental anxiety and domestic changes in their life.

Here, I am sharing an experience of a seeker based in Delhi. However, for privacy purposes we address the individual with the pseudonym ‘Ravi’.

A Personal Experience of a Devotee Chanting Rama Nama

Ravi ji had exclusive devotion for Sri Sita Ram. He also adored Sri Hanuman ji Maharaj. He had a rich spiritual routine and was committed to the practices he had taken up. He would daily perform 48 Malas of the Taraka Mantra and do Sunderkand Path in the Hanuman Temple on Saturdays. He continued this routine for approximately 18-19 years.

A dedicated devotee performing the Sunderkand Path before Sri Hanuman ji Maharaj, illustrating a sincere spiritual routine and commitment to the Taraka Mantra sadhana.

However, unfortunately during the 2020 Covid Pandemic, Ravi ji incurred severe losses in his hotel business. The business had hit its all time low and was on the verge of collapse. His priorities shifted. His sadhana continued, but in an irregular way. He ensured he chanted at least 12-13 rounds even during that low phase. Somehow, Ravi ji came to terms with reality and experimented with various other opportunities. But, he had no stable source of income.

In 2025, he came in touch with us. On personal request, we connected Ravi ji to Guruji. He regards the conversation as eye opening and deep.

Guruji shed some light on why Ravi ji had to undergo so much despite his sincere and regular sadhana. Guruji says that Prarabdha Karma is inevitable. Apparently, both materialistic and spiritual may be bound to undergo financial losses or downsize their lifestyle. However, the difference lies in their inner state of mind.

A devotee is able to read the message of Bhagawan while others get frustrated with life. Their faith comes into question.

A calm sadhaka chanting Rama Nama compared to a distressed individual, illustrating the profound difference in their inner state of mind when facing inevitable Prarabdha Karma and material losses.

Ravi ji is devoted to the Shri Rama Mantra. The vibration of this mantra is such that all aspects of life are constantly drawn towards Dharma just like how a magnet draws iron nails.

During the conversation, Guruji inquired about Ravi ji’s nature of business, his lifestyle and habits. Ravi ji happens to be a gentleman of great spiritual grit, following a vegetarian diet. He had never smoked in his life. However, he ran a multicuisine restaurant and was active in the Share market.

At this point, Guruji explained how the nature of his business was incompatible with his spiritual practices. In the initial stages- food, lifestyle, profession, nature, etc does not necessarily trigger such outcomes. However, as a person progresses and seeks liberation the Rama Mantra starts percolating in all aspects of life.

The Rama Nama begins to erase the line that divides material life from spiritual life. It  begins to have a corrective approach. The Lord sends indications that it is time to align our outer world and choices with our inner mood.

Ravi ji discussed his spiritual routine and his inner mood which guruji deeply appreciates. Since his mood was purely spiritual, guruji advised him to take steps towards reshaping his life on the principle of truth, since that is the dominant mood of the Rama Mantra. For advanced practitioners, the Rama mantra pushes one into living a life of complete transparency and spiritual principles.

This is the reason why we at YantraChants.com totally endorse the acceptance and following of the Yamas and Niyamas as one takes up the Rama Nama sadhana seriously.

1. Prosperity and Stability

The Yantra has 3 Dominant Beejaksharas. Here Ram is at the center. It brings the soothing energy of Sri Rama Nama to calm the mind along with its fiery element to pursue Sadhana with motivation and enthusiasm. This is also complemented by the second beejakshara- Hreem that is present within the yantra. Finally, Soum beejakshara invites prosperity and comfort in the mode of goodness. It corresponds to Srimati Sita Devi who graciously extends Shri Rama’s mercy in all aspects of life. Due to Her grace, life begins to receive divine support leading to financial, professional and spiritual growth. The chanter is bestowed with long life and good health.

2. Removes Doshas during Mantra Japa

: A close-up of a seeker's hand chanting mantras on a traditional Neem Japa mala before beginning the Kamadeva Yantra meditation practice.

Worshipping the Rama Mantra Yantra absorbs all Doshas that may have been committed during the japa process. It works on the deeper layers of the mind body mechanism. This makes one voluntarily adopt a Sattvik way of life over a period of time rather than forcing dramatic change.

3. Enables Grounding and Calmness

While the Rama mantra has an intense impact on the body which can get overwhelming if habits are not aligned, the Rama Mantra Yantra creates a grounding field. A person develops the right vision to interpret life situations and gets established in surrender spontaneously. It makes a person more optimistic and true to one’s spiritual routine despite exterior chaos. There is a sense of inner calm at all times.
