Bhairava Yantra: Benefits & Meditation Process

Importance of Bhairava Yantra During Mantra Japa

The Bhairava Yantra is a powerful Geometrical Representation of Lord Bhairava. It is unconventional to worship a Bhairava deity at home owing to Tantrik rules. However, the same energy is retained in a Bhairava Yantra when energized for individuals with specific problems.

Moreover, chanting the Bhairava Mantra in front of the Yantra makes the practice effective. It is the spiritual chord that connects the individual to the Devata. Using such an energized Yantra allows mental focus and helps conquer induced fear. It also streamlines the excessive energy of Sri Bhairava to benefit the seeker. One should develop the Right Mood towards Bhairava Sadhana for ultimate welfare and grace.

In this Blogpost we will explore the geometry and the benefits of Meditating on the Energized Sri Bhairava Yantra.

Exploring the Structure of the Shri Bhairava Yantra

A detailed geometrical illustration of the Shri Bhairava Yantra, featuring the central Shreem Beeja within intersecting triangles, surrounded by concentric mantra circles and the outer Bhupura.

The 4 Gates of the Yantra:

Although the Bhupura is present in all Yantras, it dramatically differs in its significance and function. Conventionally the Ashta Dikpalas guard the 8 directions. But, the Bhupura in the Shri Bhairava Yantra represent the energy field of the 8 main Bhairavas. Each gate and corner has its corresponding Bhairava.

The 4 gates indicate the cardinal directions like North, East, West and South. The 4 corners make the ordinal directions namely as North-East, North-West, South-East and South-West.

Benefits of Meditating on The Outermost Concentric Space

The outermost concentric space represents the realm of the outward facing Bhairavas who have their influence mostly on external life situations.

Ruru Bhairava: Our Wise and Spiritual Guardian

A detailed depiction of Sri Ruru Bhairava, the spiritual guardian of the Southeast direction. He is shown creating a protective shield to sustain Tantrika Sadhana and attract spiritual heights.

Sri Ruru Bhairava occupies the Southeast direction. He has the blend of benevolence and intense protective qualities. He creates a Kavach (protective shield) to sustain a Tantrika Sadhana like the Sri Bhairava Nama-Yantra Sadhana. Therefore, all known and unknown enemies are rendered ineffective.

His grace attracts knowledge and spiritual heights. It helps a person develop intuition, preventing future calamities by making wiser decisions.

Krodha Bhairava: Supreme Authority

Then there is Krodha Bhairava guarding the South West. He ensures that the Yantra encoded by Guru Shakti holds massive power and is utilized for making the individual incisive in grit and action. By His grace, a Sadhaka is able to devote more time in Sadhana.

One is able to hold to authoritative positions in life without being overtaken by Pride. Doubts and inconsistencies reduce gradually, increasing efficiency.

Kapala Bhairava: Attacking Illusion

Tanjore style inspired artwork of a fierce Kapala red Bhairava riding an elephant, demonstrating the immense spiritual power

Next, Sri Kapala Bhairava who faces the North West direction ensures that energy is conserved only for fruitive work. The mind may project countless rewarding opportunities and prospects, but only the genuine ones are filtered. One is saved from entering into shady partnerships, alliances, financial scams, etc.

Thus the Krodha Bhairava and the Kapala Bhairava complement each other. Krodha Bhairava generates massive power while Kapala Bhairava conserves that power and doubles it by eliminating work or bonds that are wasteful.

Samhara Bhairava: Destroyer of Karmic Cycles

He has 10 hands that symbolically, it indicates the power to guard a devotee against the onslaught of Karma that corners him/her from all 10 directions.

Meditating on Him helps arrest negative influences on work/job, making it feel like a source of joy rather than stress. Family becomes more cooperative and responsibilities are shared creating harmony.

If we attract His Divine Grace then all karmically strained areas start seeing improvement. Ancestral sins (Pitru Dosh) stop reflecting in the life of a true devotee. Sanchita and Agami Karmas get neutralized when seeking liberation. Also, the inevitable Prarabdha Karma becomes bearable and one feels supported throughout life.

The benefits are amplified when prepared and energized on Bhojpatra. This is because Bhojpatra is a naturally occurring material found in the Himalayan Regions. Its purity is suitable for all types of Yantra, especially Shaiva Yantra.

At YantraChants.com we employ this specific medium as it allows a manual yantra making process over commercial mass production alternatives. Guruji personally energizes the Bhairava Yantra for seekers who intend to invite the Lord in their life.

Benefits of Meditating on The Middle Concentric Space

This Space holds 4 more Bhairavas which are inner focused. Unlike the outer Bhairavas who are focused on External work and Outer Situations, the Bhairavas in the middle space relate to mental energies.

Asitanga Bhairava: Master of Creative Energies

Pattachitra style painting of a dark-complexioned Asitanga Bhairava standing with a swan, symbolizing the fine-tuning of inner mental energies and the transition to inner bliss.

Asitanga Bhairava is associated with the Eastern direction, the direction of renewal. This translates as a surge of fresh ideas and creativity in the sadhaka. Energy depletion reduces.

Chanda Bhairava: Master of Creative Energies

Chanda Bhairava stands in the South, in the direction of Yama (Death). He therefore empowers a person to face deadly challenges by altering the inner system. His Grace can brutally enhance confidence. His prowess is similar to Devi Bagalamukhi for achieving victory and eliminating rivalry. Chanda Bhairava works primarily on the Muladhara Chakra to transform fear into courage and higher energy.

People from heavy competitive businesses or politics usually take to Bhairava sadhana, but under regulated supervision. This is also an indication of caution while approaching the Bhairavas.

One thing to be noted is that the Bhairavas contain raw energy and if the energies are not managed in through an enlightened Guru, these energies can create heavy disbalance within the mind-body system and can disturb one’s life energies. Hence the Yantra used, must be energized suitably by an adept Guru, as per one’s intent to worship it or after referring to the Karmic alignment of the aspirant.

Unmatta Bhairava: From Mind Chatter to Inner Bliss

Traditional Indian painting depicting Lord Unmatta Bhairava riding and dancing with a white horse, symbolizing the destruction of karmic cycles and rapid spiritual elevation

Unmatta Bhairava is associated with the West direction. He controls and fine tunes inner chatter, negative talk and the ego. His energy can be intimidating as it brings irresistible inner transformation. Unmatta means ‘mad or possessed’. Therefore, the inner shift process can bring a supposed impression of madness, unless the ocean of Divine Madness (Bhairava Realization) is attained.

A person who is not regulated through proper instructions, should avoid long chanting of Bhairava mantras since it has the combined energies of the Ashta Bhairavas. The Mantra works on different layers of the mind-body and consciousness through each Bhairava.

Some people reported increased mind-chatter and  self-talk, because of unregulated chants of Bhairava Mantras after getting influenced by social media.

Sri Unmatta Bhairava is the one who regulates it. But, His invocation should be done through a properly Guru Energized Bhojpatra Yantra to promote grounding. The Bhojpatra medium connects a person with the Earth element. It reduces the intensity of the mind, drawing it more towards the physical reality rather than mental speculation.

Bheeshana Bhairava: Destroying the Root of Evil

raditional artwork of a fierce Bheeshana Bhairava standing in a cremation ground, representing the burning of evil tendencies and lifetimes of samskaras.

The last Bhairava namely Bhishana Bhairava associates Himself with the Northern direction. He is called Bheeshana not merely because of His dreadful appearance but also because of His dominion over evil spirits and negative tendencies.

He burns the Samskaras of many lifetimes that appear as evil spirits, as if causing fear and excitement. He subdues extreme worry or the feeling of darkness and eerie, similar to one who is undergoing extreme depression.

The characteristics and nature of Sri Bhairava across His 8 forms are diverse. When Guruji energizes the Yantra for seekers with their birth details, a compatibility is established, supporting meditation and gradual transformation.

Benefits of Meditating on the Inner Concentric Space

The Inner Concentric Space is in fact a relief for householders because beyond the 8 Digpala Bhairavas is the Batuka Bhairava Region which is accessible to one and all in a child-like form.

This form is extremely satvik, if worshipped in the Satvik form. Showing Dhoop to the Yantra and praying to Batuka Bhairava consecrated within the Yantra with the famous Batuk Bhairava kuru kuru mantra offers coolness from the fierce border areas of the Yantra.

When the Mind rests on the Batuk Bhairava Mantra, it gets translated into a powerful inner fire sacrifice, wherein the thoughts, samskaras and vasanas are poured into the altar of Sri Batuka Bhairava that represents fire element. So, it enables a complete reconfiguration of the mind. The fiery power of Sri Batuka Bhairava Mantra absorbs the heaviness of a well intentioned mind, relieving it of the burden.

The Male and Female Intersecting Triangles

In the center, there are two intersecting triangles that highlight the male and female energies. The downward facing triangle represents the female energy and the upward facing intersecting triangle which represents the male energy.

The six triangles formed as a result  of the intersection represent the 6 passions formed as a result of male and female energy collusion namely Kama (Lust), Krodha (Anger), Lobha (Greed), Moha (Attachment), Mada (Pride) and Matsarya (Envy). The 6 passions represent Nature also known as Prakriti or Maya itself. But at the core lies the Shreem Beeja.

The Core Bindu with the Shreem Beeja

At the Core of the Sri Bhairava Yantra is the Powerful Shreem Beeja. When a Sadhaka resets his mind finally on the Shreem Beeja in the center, the pure Beeja that represents the Water Element.

It soothes the mind that has been burnt of its fear, negativities, compulsion and egoic tendencies. The mind which is scorched by the Bhairava Tattva then merges into the non-dual water element Beeja which also represents abundance, coolness and calmness. Anyone who has a natural Karmic alignment can use a Guru Energized Bhojpatra Bhairava Yantra can see good results.

raditional Rajput style painting of a devotee meditating on the Shreem Beeja in a lotus pond, representing the soothing water element at the core of the Bhairava Yantra. While Lord Bhairava blessing him.

So, the journey from the Bhupura upto the innermost concentric space of Shri Batuka Bhairava focused on burning false identity. It was the process of unlearning our assumed identity. Finally, when we reach the final quarter of the Shri Bhairava Yantra, we plunge into infinite calmness.

Here we realize our true identity as the Shuddhatma which is an embodiment of bliss. Thus, the fire of material life is completely doused and one is dispersed in the ocean of transcendental joy.

Preparation for the Daily Bhairava Sadhana

Install your personal Guru-Energized Bhairava Yantra in the North east direction.

Sit on a cotton or woolen mat for the sadhana after a bath between 6:00 and 8:00 AM.

Decorate the Yantra with Red Hibiscus flower. Offer Kesar and a little bit of red vermillion on a plate to the Yantra. If possible, offer Jaggery and black sesame seeds to the Yantra.

Use a 108 beaded Agate (Black Hakik) or Rudraksha Mala to chant “Sri Bhairvaya Namah” or “Jaya Jaya Bhairavaya Namo Namah”.

: Illustration of a hand holding a 108 beaded japa mala, demonstrating the precise counting method required for the daily Bhairava Yantra meditation and chanting process.

You can acquire an Energized Mala for the Sadhana from your Guru or at YantraChants.com . You can choose any one mantra and stay consistent with it. If you have taken the Bhairava Suitability Service, you would already know which mala is more aligned for you.

Invoking Sri Guru Before Bhairava Sadhana

Begin by chanting ‘Shri Gurubhyoh Namah’ 21 times. You can either use the counter to track the count or chant it in the conventional way on your fingers. Close your eyes. Bring your Guru into your mind, if you have received Shaiva/Tantrika initiation.

Think about Guruji while you recite Shri Gurubhyoh namah. Adopt the mode of complete surrender or Sharanagati to Guruji and mentally offer your respects. This ensures that you are guided by the Guru Tattva throughout the process.

Sub-Process: Manas Archana Seva

In the Manas Archana seva for Sri Bhairava, we apply sandalwood paste (Chandan) for the external facing Devatas while Bhasma for the internal ones. Sandalwood signifies cooling.

It symbolically indicates soothing difficult patterns of life. Bhasma signifies burning. Offering Bhasma to Lord Shiva relates to perishing the distortions of the mind.

The Manas archana seva is the same for both elements.

To maintain an accurate count of 12 visualize Sri Bhairava standing in front of you. Begin applying Sandalwood paste to the left big toe (hallux) of Sri Bhairava’s feet. There onwards move towards your right for each nama till you reach the pinky toe.

Visualization of Sri Bhairava's feet for the Manas Archana Seva, illustrating the 12 precise points for mentally offering sandalwood paste or bhasma to maintain count during mantra japa.

For Sri Bhairava’s right feet, start from the pinkie toe till you reach the hallux. For this foot too, you must move from your left-to right. By now, you would have completed 10 counts of the Nama. Finally, apply a dot on the center of both feet to complete 12 offerings to Sri Bhairava.

Detailed Bhairava Yantra Meditation and Nama Japa Process

The Yantra Sadhana is complemented with the Bhairava Mantra Japa. Chant 12 Nama Mantras (i.e 12 beads for Meditating on each Bhairava). To keep the count while meditating on the mala follow a Manasa Archana Seva for Sri Bhairava.

  1. Taking the permission from Guruji to commence the Sadhana, mentally contemplate that you are entering the Loka (abode) of Sri Bhairava from the Eastern Gate (Top of the Yantra).
  2. Move your awareness starting from Ruru Bhairava. For a count of 12 Namas offer Archana before you move to Krodha Bhairava, Kapala Bhairava and Samhara Bhairava. By now you would have completed- 48 namas.
  3. Follow the same process for the middle concentric space starting from Sri Asitanga Bhairava, uptill Sri Bheeshana Bhairava. You would have completed 96 chants of the mantra.
  4. Next, you move towards the innermost space of Sri Batuka Bhairava. Follow the Manas Archana Puja now rendering to the Bala Swarupa of Sri Bhairava. This calms all the inner agitations. In this space you would have completed the full 108 beads of your first mala.
  5. Then on your mala, pause at the meru without crossing it. Invoke the Guru Tattva and under its supervision render service to Sri Bhairava. Move clockwise as you begin focusing on the first uppermost triangle. Start offering each vice starting from Kama (Lust), Krodha (Anger), Lobha (Greed), Moha (Delusion), Mada (Pride), and Matsarya (Jealousy).

Visualize each vice turning into a hibiscus flower and offer it at the lotus feet of Sri Bhairava. Guruji calls this the heart of the Bhairava Sadhana and the safest process to avoid surfacing of Vasanas in living experience. Mentally chant Shri Gurubhyoh Namah.
  6. As you approach the center, focus on the Shreem Beeja. Bow down before the Guru Tattva, Bhairava and Devi. This marks the completion of 1 round (108 counts of the mantra).
  7. Next repeat the same process. But, this time, you begin meditating outwards. From the beeja you travel to the innermost concentric space, then the middle and ultimately the outermost concentric space. You connect with the gross world by exiting from the East gate of Sri Bhraiva’s field.

Repeat the same Manas Puja process and the clockwise movement through each space. So, you complete another set of 108 beads. The (108×2=216) Namas chanted while entering and exiting the Yantra together form 1 breath of  Bhairava Yantra Sadhana.

The heart of the practice lies in the attention given to the details and precision. This practice develops focus and cultivates a right mindset in the Sadhaka.
  8. With more practice, you may gradually increase till 8 breaths of Bhairva Yantra Sadhana.
  9. Establishing yourself in such Yantra Sadhana is a powerful methodology in steading the mind and attaining the Grace of Shri Bhairava.
