The Great Om Saravana Bhavaya Murugan Mantra
The mantra about which we are going to discuss in this video post is Om Saravana Bhavaya Namaha. The literal translation of the word Saravana is ‘A clump of reeds. However, it also refers to Kartikeya, popularly known as Murugan in South India. First we shall Begin by getting introduced to Lord Murugan, also called Muruga or Kartikeya.
To invoke his divine presence daily, many devotees begin their sadhana by chanting the lord murugan mantra. This simple yet potent invocation clears mental fog, awakens strength, and builds a personal bond with the youthful deity of wisdom and valor.
Who is Kartikeya or Lord Murugan
Kartikeya has many names such as Skanda, and Subramanya, also spelt as Subramanya Swamy, is the commander-in-chief of the Devatas, He was born with the purpose of vanquishing the demon Tarakasura. Known for his youthful charm and strength, Murugan is deeply worshipped throughout India, particularly in the southern regions. The story goes like this-

Once a demon named Tarakasura tricked Lord Brahma and got the boon that only the son of Lord Shiva could kill him. Tarakasura became proud and troubled innocent creatures. During that period, unfortunately, Lord Shiva was immersed in meditation.
He was yet to marry Parvati Devi.
So, the Devatas ordered Kamadeva to disturb Lord Shiva’s meditation and entice him into marrying the goddess. Then the son born from their union shall be able to eliminate Tarakasura. Kamadeva recognized that he was playing with fire but had no option but to obey the gods.

He fired the arrow of love at the Lord’s third eye. Being insulted thus, the Lord’s third eye opened, spewing fire at Kamadeva reducing him into ashes. The gods then pacified Lord Shiva and requested Him to accept Parvati as His consort to which the Lord agreed.
The divine marriage thus took place with great pomp and celebrations. Agni Deva reminded the Lord of the divine task of siring a son.
The Heat of Lord Shiva’s Masculinity
Lord Shiva handed over his semen to Agni but the heat was unbearable even for the Lord of fire. He deposited the fluid in the Ganges.
One cannot even imagine the intensity of the heat. Even the coolest of rivers, goddess Ganga, went into flames. She deposited the semen on a clump of reeds known as Saravana which developed into six babies. The six Kritikas or constellations who were passing by, couldn’t take their eyes off the sons of Shiva.

They sat down to breastfeed the babies and nurse them. When mother Parvati and Lord Shiva came, the six babies became one, universally known as Skanda. Skanda, later slew Tarakasura and relieved the three worlds.
A Description of Lord Skanda
In chapter 10 verse 24 of the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna declares that ‘Among generals, I am Skanda’.
Lord Kartikeya is shown holding a spear and sitting on a peacock. The spear’s shaftdepicts the spinal cord while the leaf-like pointed structure represents the brain. Peacock is very flamboyant and hence very proud. Lord Kartikeya sits on a peacock subduing all forms of pride like his father Shiva.
Lets now Explore the Murugan Yantra before analyzing the Saravana Bhavaya Mantra
Skanda Yantra: The Astral Blueprint of Lord Murugan
The Skanda Yantra is a divya yantrika pratikriti, a sacred geometric embodiment—of Bhagavan Skanda, who is venerated as Kumara, Subrahmanya, Shanmukha, and Murugan. Rooted in the Shakta and Shaiva Tantric traditions, this yantra carries the tejas (radiance), bala (strength), and viveka (discernment) of the Deva Senapati—the commander of the celestial forces.
In the esoteric sciences of mantra and yantra shastra, this is not merely a diagram, it is a svarūpa (form) of Skanda’s own shakti. Where the mantra is the shabda-brahman (divine sound vibration), the yantra is the rupa-brahman (divine form). Together, they create a bridge between adhyatmika shakti (inner power) and bahya shakti (external protection).
The Skanda Yantra resonates most potently with mantras such as:
ॐ सरवनभवाय नमः (Om Saravanabhavāya Namah)
ॐ स्कन्दाय नमः (Om Skandāya Namah)
ॐ सुब्रह्मण्याय नमः (Om Subrahmaṇyāya Namah)
ॐ षण्मुखाय नमः (Om Ṣaṇmukhāya Namah)
Each of these nāma mantras is a bija-dvāra, a seed-gate, invoking specific shaktis of Lord Skanda: youthfulness (kaumāra), victorious spirit (jaya-shakti), inner fire (agnitattva), and divine wisdom (jnāna-shakti). When recited in front of a properly energized Skanda Yantra, these mantras awaken antar-vīra bhāva, the heroic potential hidden within the sādhaka.
This yantra is particularly aligned for those undergoing:
Karmic challenges where the soul must assert dharmic will.
Spiritual stagnation where inner light appears veiled.
Conflicts in external life demanding clarity, protection, and divine intervention.
It is said in the Siddha tradition that Skanda’s yantra acts like a vajra-kavacha, a thunderbolt armor, around the aura of the devotee. Just as Kartikeya rides the peacock to slay the demon Tarakasura, this yantra helps the seeker overcome inner enemies such as moha (delusion), bhaya (fear), and aviveka (confusion).
Unlike general-purpose yantras, the Skanda Yantra is meant for the udbhavana (arising) of one’s shaurya (valor) and atma-jyoti (inner radiance). It is especially powerful when installed in temples of Lord Murugan, near Vel (his divine spear), or kept in personal shrines by warriors of dharma, be they spiritual seekers, householders, or protectors of knowledge.
To meditate upon this yantra is to invite the presence of the youthful Lord riding His peacock, holding the Vel, and shining like a thousand suns. It is to say to the universe: “I invoke my divine will. I stand for Truth. I walk with Skanda.”
Powerful Benefits of the Skanda Yantra
The Skanda Yantra blesses the devotee with clarity, courage, and victory over both internal and external enemies. It harmonizes Mars energy in one’s horoscope and helps resolve disputes, health challenges, and competitive struggles. Regular worship of the Skanda Yantra attracts spiritual growth, removes fear, and grants protection against psychic attacks.
This yantra is especially effective for students, warriors, orators, spiritual seekers, and householders who wish to lead with dharma and devotion. The yantra invokes divine intelligence, supporting quick decision-making and spiritual insight.
Symbolic Essence and Structure of the Skanda Yantra
The Skanda Yantra is a sacred design that carries the divine energy of Lord Murugan, also known as Skanda, Kartikeya, or Subramanya. He is the six-faced son of Shiva and Parvati, a powerful warrior and protector of dharma. This yantra is a spiritual map that helps us connect to his blessings, strength, and wisdom.

At the heart of the yantra is a special shape formed by two triangles. One triangle points upward and stands for Shiva, the power of fire, focus, and action. The other triangle points downward and represents Shakti, the energy of flow, nurture, and creativity. When these two triangles come together, they form a six-pointed star, showing the perfect balance of divine masculine and feminine energies. This balance is what gave birth to Skanda, and it is also what helps us stay strong, centered, and peaceful in life.
Right in the middle of this star is a tiny dot called the bindu. It may look small, but it holds great power. The bindu stands for pure consciousness—our true, peaceful self. This is where all prayers begin and where divine energy enters the yantra. Around the bindu are six beautiful lotus petals. These petals stand for the six faces of Lord Skanda. Each face has its own unique energy and protects us in different ways.
Each petal also connects with a syllable from the sacred mantra “Sa Ra Va Na Bha Va”. These six syllables are like keys. They open up the inner powers hidden inside us.
The syllable “Sa” brings brightness like the sun and helps us focus.
“Ra” removes fear and burns away negative thoughts.
“Va” gives the strength to move forward in life with love.
“Na” helps us speak the truth and listen deeply.
“Bha” keeps us steady and strong like the earth.
And the final “Va” again brings purity and grace to everything we do.
When you chant this mantra and gaze at the yantra, your mind becomes calm, your heart opens up, and your inner strength begins to grow.
The whole yantra is drawn inside a square frame with gates on all four sides. These gates are not just for decoration—they represent openings for divine energy to enter our life from all directions. The square also reminds us of the earth element and keeps the energy grounded.
To make this yantra more powerful, it is often drawn on a special leaf called Bhojpatra, which has been used by sages since ancient times. When this yantra is created with love and care using sacred ingredients, it becomes even more charged with energy.
For example, Ganga Jal, water from the holy Ganga river, brings purity and washes away negativity.
Rose water opens the heart and brings a soft, loving feeling.
Kesar (saffron) lifts the energy and makes it feel divine.
Kumkum, made from turmeric and lime, brings blessings and courage.
Ashtagandha, a mix of eight holy herbs, carries the fragrance of devotion and draws the presence of the Deities.
Chandan (sandalwood powder) has a cooling, calming effect and helps focus the mind.
When these sacred items are used to draw the yantra, they don’t just add beauty, they make the yantra come alive. It becomes a tool for prayer, a shield of protection, and a doorway to inner peace.
The Skanda Yantra is not just a symbol. It is a living energy. It helps us become brave, wise, and connected to something much greater than ourselves. When we sit in front of this yantra, chant the sacred mantra, and offer flowers, water, or even just our love, we begin to feel the presence of Lord Murugan within our heart.
How the Skanda Yantra is prepared at YantraChants.com
At YantraChants.com, the Skanda Yantra is not treated as a decorative object. It is created as a sacred energy-body, prepared with deep devotion, purity, and strict adherence to the timeless traditions of the Siddhas and Vedic seers. Every yantra is handcrafted with the single purpose of invoking the living presence of Lord Murugan in the life of the seeker.
The process begins with selecting authentic Bhojpatra, a sacred birch bark from the Himalayas. This ancient medium is known to hold and radiate subtle spiritual vibrations for many years. It is the same material on which Rishis once wrote sacred mantras and scriptures. When divine geometry is drawn on Bhojpatra with devotion and mantra, it becomes a powerful tool of spiritual transformation.
The yantra is carefully drawn by hand using traditional pastes made from Ashtagandha, Kumkum, and turmeric. These substances are not chosen for their color or scent, but for their deep spiritual properties. Ashtagandha, a blend of eight sacred herbs, is used in temple rituals across India to welcome divine energies. Kumkum, prepared from purified turmeric and natural lime, represents the power of Devi Shakti. Turmeric itself is a purifier, protector, and a bringer of auspiciousness. When these are mixed in the right proportions and used to inscribe the yantra, they create a medium through which Murugan’s energy can be invoked and anchored.

Every Skanda Yantra at YantraChants is prepared only during powerful astrological muhurthas. These are specific times when planetary alignments favor divine invocation and ensure the full awakening of the yantra. The timings are calculated using traditional jyotisha methods, and every step of the process is supervised by lineage-based Gurus who carry the living transmission of this knowledge. Their presence ensures the spiritual integrity and purity of the yantra.
What makes the Skanda Yantra at YantraChants truly unique is that it is not just drawn—it is awakened. Once prepared, the yantra is placed on a sanctified altar where it is infused with the energy of the Guru Parampara. It undergoes traditional Vedic rituals and inner offering by the Guru. These practices are done with one intention, to invite Lord Murugan’s living presence into the yantra so that it can guide, protect, and bless the one who receives it.
As part of its consecration, the yantra receives sacred abhishekam. Pure Ganga Jal is poured to purify. Rose water softens and opens the heart field. Sandalwood paste calms the mind and anchors the energy. Saffron milk brightens the aura of the yantra with a golden glow. These offerings are not rituals for formality, they are expressions of devotion, awakening the yantra into a state of living presence.
No two Skanda Yantras are alike. Each one is created with a unique spiritual sankalpa, an intention held during its creation and energization. When you receive this yantra, it is already pulsing with life. It becomes a quiet but powerful companion on your path, helping you connect to Murugan’s wisdom, protection, and strength.
At YantraChants.com, the Skanda Yantra is not mass-produced. It is born through devotion, guided by tradition, and energized with the blessings of the parampara. It carries the presence of Lord Murugan himself, standing as a silent protector and source of clarity wherever it is placed.
This is not just a yantra. It is a doorway into divine consciousness. And it is prepared only when called into being, with care, purity, and love.
Why the Skanda Yantra Must Come from an Authentic Guru Parampara
A yantra is not a decorative item, it is not merely a geometric diagram printed on paper or etched in metal. A true yantra is a conscious, awakened field of divine intelligence, and that awakening does not happen by accident, it happens through initiation, through prāṇa transmission, and through Guru Kripa.
Only a self-realized Guru, who has walked the path, burnt through karmas, and merged with the divine, has the power to infuse prāṇa shakti into a yantra. For the Skanda Yantra, connected to Lord Murugan, the eternal warrior of dharma, this is especially vital. Without this spiritual ignition from a Guru belonging to a living paramparā, the yantra remains nothing more than inert geometry. But with it, the yantra becomes a living, breathing ally in your life, silently protecting, guiding, and activating forces within and around you.
Many shops and online sellers today offer mass-produced yantras. These are often copied, printed, or mechanically drawn without any respect for timing, mantra, or the sacred processes involved. These yantras are not awakened. They may carry the shape but not the shakti. No matter how beautiful they look, they do not carry the living vibration of Murugan unless they have been prepared and energized in the presence of realized beings who hold the mantra-siddhi of that Deity.

An authentic Guru doesn’t just energize a yantra. He sees your karma, your unseen blockages, and your inner longing. Through mantra, tapas, and sankalpa, he invokes Murugan’s blessings specifically on your behalf, and installs those blessings into the yantra meant for you. That yantra becomes personalized, not in name, but in soul-frequency. It becomes a bridge between you and the Deity, a force that responds to your prayers, your sādhanā, and even your silence.
At YantraChants.com, the Skanda Yantra is prepared only under the guidance of such lineage-based Gurus. These Gurus are not in the business of selling products, they are in the path of service. The energy they offer through the yantra is not something that can be priced, it is priceless. The money offered in return is not a fee, it is simply a sacred energy exchange, a gesture of respect for the time, effort, and tapas that has gone into preparing a divine object of power.
When you receive a yantra from such a source, you are not buying a spiritual tool, you are being given a divine presence in physical form. You are receiving something that has been created with mantra, intention, sacred fire, and above all, the silent touch of a liberated being.
For sādhakas walking the inner path, this makes all the difference. A yantra from a shop may sit on your shelf, but a yantra from a realized Guru sits on your altar, moves with your soul, and transforms your destiny. This is the importance of choosing wisely. The form may look similar, but the inner force is worlds apart.
Let your yantra come from living tradition, not lifeless commerce. Let it carry the weight of blessings, not just design. That is why, at YantraChants, every yantra is not sold, it is prepared, awakened, and offered, so that those truly seeking Murugan’s protection and light may receive it in the purest way possible.
